Born in 1856, Henri Edmond Cross was a French painter. He grew up in Lille, before completing his education at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He went on to work and live in Paris.

Cross founded an artist society in 1884, which organised independent exhibitions. He met many Neo-Impressionist painters including Georges Seurat. He was greatly influenced by Manet and Pissarro, working in a pointillist style with soft colours.

While his early work focused on still-life and portraiture, Cross became well-known for his landscapes. He painted en plein air and regularly exhibited for the duration of his career.
