"Joni Mitchell sang, “You never know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone.” Having taken freedom of travel for granted my whole life, the Covid restrictions were a reminder that nothing is certain and makes me appreciate with new perspective my recent trips to capture photos of amazing places in Europe.
Every moment has been savoured, from the atmospheric magic of misty winter evenings with the fog rolling in and swallowing up the narrow cobbled streets of Venice, to standing alone atop the Dome of the Vatican looking down to an empty St Peter’s Square, from hiking the Cinque Terre in Italy (and wondering how far and how many more uphill steps until the end of the trail) to being greeted on arrival into Lisbon by a pink sky (the result of a dust storm blowing across Europe from the Sahara) .
Empty Algarve beaches, tranquil fishing villages in Paros and quiet sunset vistas in Santorini made clear the benefits of travelling out of season ahead of a summer of a return to Europe from many abroad, treasured even more knowing now how fortunate I am to be able to experience the exhilaration of visiting beautiful places.
Behind every destination were appreciative locals welcoming visitors back to their communities, their contagious happiness enhancing the joy of once again being able to wander and soak in the landscapes, cities, and cultures away from home."
