Be Inspired - Black History Month

February marks the annual celebration of Black History month in the USA and Canada, which was created to acknowledge and celebrate the wide and illustrious impact that Black Americans have had on US history, from pop culture to politics. This collection recognising Black History Month includes art and artists spanning centuries – Robert Seldon Duncanson’s nineteenth century American landscapes, Jacob Lawrence’s twentieth century dynamic cubism and Aurora Bell’s Millennial graphic design, and yet only touches the very surface of the abundant pool of Black art and artistry.

Our Black History Month collection features Black artists, the rich and complex history of Black America and the African American diaspora, heritage, and culture. This collection pays homage to African American ancestry, paralleling headscarf heritage, from Louisiana’s tignon to West Africa’s gele, and featuring far-flung fabrics like the Central African Kuba or Ghanaian Kente. It also celebrates Black American life, domesticity, and celebration, from the Harlem Renaissance of the early twentieth century to the civil rights movement of the 1960s to modern day icons like Beyoncé.
