Be Inspired - Brutalist Beauty

Brutalism is a rather contentious architectural style that was founded and prevalent in Europe from the 1950s until the 1970s. The block-like concrete structures and utilitarian style are beloved by some and disliked by just as many. It’s often viewed as austere and cold and the name itself doesn’t necessarily construe feelings of plush comfort or warmth. However, the name ‘brutalism’ wasn’t created to describe it’s perceived ‘brutal’ or ‘brutish’ style but rather after ‘béton brut’, the French for ‘raw concrete’. Unfortunately, Brutalism was popular at a time of great socio-political unrest and as such has been associated with dystopian and totalitarian regimes.

This collection finds the beauty in Brutalism that many miss and that primes it for a comeback in 2024. This stripped back style is sturdy and imposing, structural and indestructible. With emphasis on industrial materials and textures, these powerful prints are geometric and graphic. Featuring simple clean lines and pared back colour schemes, Brutalism has an honesty and transparency to it. When weaved together with softer trends, juxtaposing well with warm organic materials, this collection is not cold but energetic and robust.
