Artist in Focus - Marsha Hammel

Marsha Hammel has lived in Panama, Italy, Germany and Canada. She has travelled the United States extensively, spending time in the west and north-east as well as in the sunbelt cities of Richmond and New Orleans. Since 1980 she has enjoyed artistic success and inspiration living and working in the southern part of the United States, and is currently based in a quiet, small city in the mountain of western North Carolina. Marsha Hammel was awarded a scholarship for art in 1967 to the North Carolina Governor’s School and between 1968 and 1971 attended the Virginia Commonwealth University, studying in the Fine Arts Department.

How would you describe your art?

My work is contemporary derived from European Modernism, sifted through American Abstract Expressionism and flavored with Pop Art.

How has your art/style changed?

My style of drawing and painting has become more detailed and realistic in recent years. Reviewing work from 45 years ago I now find inspiration for new work - looser and more abstract.

What do you hope to communicate through your art?

My work hopes to provide a reminder of the best of humanity, a celebration of creativity and a reflection of the joy of living.
