Series Spotlight - Zaira Zarotti

For Zaira Zarotti, hailing from an artistic family, creating is meditative and intimate experience, which is why her blog The Freaky Table is a fusion of her many skills, from food styling and photography, to raku ceramics, to cookery. Her photography often works in tandem with her recipes of simply and carefully prepared food, including her recent  venture into recipe videos with moments and stills as starkly beautiful as her static photography. Often including food from her own vegetable garden, Zarotti celebrates the imperfect and odd beauty of the everyday.

The masterful use of chiaroscuro in her striking photography is reminiscent of the trompe-l’œil kitchen and market still lifes of the Dutch Renaissance. Her photos, however, are distinctly more rustic and warm and heartfelt, including ingredients for an onion compote made for friends as gifts, pomegranates grown in her garden, and a bird’s nest found at her front door. Her work shows the beauty in both the cultivated, with her styled food, and in the organic, with fjords and fields and lagoons and landscapes from around the world including Paris, New Zealand, Norway , and her home, Venice.
